Dance/Movement Therapy

What is Dance/Movement Therapy?

Dance/movement therapy (DMT) is defined by the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) as the psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual, for the purpose of improving health and well-being.

Laurel Crawford, Dance/Movement Therapist, MS, BC-DMT

Laurel Crawford is a board certified dance/movement therapist with over 10 years of experience. She is a graduate of the Master of Science in Dance/Movement Therapy program at Pratt Institute and a recipient of the Outstanding Merit Award and Pratt Circle Award. Her experience includes leading group therapy, individual therapy, and creative movement classes with people of all ages. She is thrilled to bring dance/movement therapy to Body Collective.

Why Dance/Movement Therapy?

Laurel uses body based practices and creative movement to support you on your journey to become your most integrated, authentic self. She is passionate about utilizing mind/body processes to integrate the mind, body and spirit.

“Your body is where you live. With self-compassion practices, your body can be your sanctuary, with creative movement practices, your body can be your outlet for expressing emotion. As a dance/movement therapist, it is my honor to support you in your journey to transforming your body into your home.”

Laurel uses a balance of self-reflective and interactive techniques to help individuals and groups enhance awareness, connection and expression. Laurel is a performing dancer and drummer and believes in engaging in the creative process to find authenticity and joy.

Balasana is a great pose to have in your toolbox for when you need some additional grounding. In Sanskrit, bala means child and asana refers to a posture. Since Balasana is a resting pose, it can be great for helping relieve fatigue and can promote relaxation. This pose also helps stretch the ankles, hips, and shoulders. If you suffer from lower back pain, it can help relieve pain by lengthening and stretching the spine. ⠀ 12 0
Feeling a little ungrounded lately? Try these three poses to help you feel more stable. When practicing these poses, try to notice the parts of your body that are connected to the earth. ⠀ 13 0
